Exploring Supplements ADHD Treatment

Medication has long been the first line of defense against ADHD. However, during recent years reports of children being adversely effected by stimulant medications has naturally discouraged some parents and individuals from using them and people are turning to other treatment options including supplements. ADHD treatment options do not have to be restricted to one type, quite often an integrated approach using a number of methods will have the most benefit.

In this article we’ll take a look at some of the supplements that can be used in an ADHD treatment programe.

Nutritional Supplements

Proponents of nutritional supplements believe that they play a crucial role in easing symptoms of ADHD. The brain requires certain nutrients and minerals to function optimally. Deficiencies in certain vitamins and minerals are well known to have detrimental effects on brain processing and behavior. If taking stimulant medication appetite can be effected, couple this with sometimes-picky eating, children with ADHD may have some vitamin deficiencies.

Herbal Supplements

Herbal supplements have a long history of being used as sedatives and also for boosting memory and concentration. There are a number of formulas available that are specifically for ADHD, which can help to reduce hyperactivity and impulsiveness and improve concentration and attention span.

Fish Oil Supplements

Fish oil supplements have become a popular supplement as they can have a positive effect on helping alleviate behaviors associated with ADHD. Inattention and impulsiveness are among the many symptoms of ADHD that may be improved through using fish oils.

Fish oil supplements worked by intervening with the brain's functions. According to research, the brain is composed of 60% fats, some of the most significant are the omega-3 fats that are found in high concentrations in oily fish. A study trial was done on 120 children aged 6 – 12 with dyspraxia and most with ADHD and/or dyslexia. Half the group were given fish oils for 3months and the others were given a placebo. The group that took the fish oils showed significant improvement in inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness.

Mineral Supplements

There are certain minerals necessary in the normal development of the brain including both magnesium and zinc. Significant deficiencies on these minerals could cause adverse reactions in the brain and the complex chemical composition of the brain. A number of studies have found that children with ADHD are deficient in magnesium. In a study of 75 children with magnesium deficiency and ADHD some were prescribed magnesium supplements along with other standard treatments and the rest just had the standard treatments. The children taking the magnesium supplements showed significant behavior improvements, whereas the other group actually displayed a worsening of behavior.
